The incredible story of the world’s most premature twins; they had 0% chance of life

This is an incredible story, worthy of the Guinness World Record, which was delivered to him a few days ago. What this family lived through can be described as a miracle, but also as a number of moments in which the babies seemed to be more on the side of death than life.

“Their babies were not viable, the doctors said. Zero chance of survival.” counts the world organization.

The feat stars Shakina Rajendram, Kevin Nadarajah and their two children, Adiah Laelynn and Adrial Luka. It all started with Shakina’s labor at 21 weeks and 5 days, more than four months ahead of schedule.

At that moment they told her that the pregnancy was a loss and that nothing could be done to save them. Still, a year later, the four of them are in Ontario, Canada, celebrating their first birthday as the world’s most premature twins.

This is how the decisive moments lived

Adiah and Adrial were born on March 4, 2022. Weighing just 330g, girl Adiah was born 23 minutes before her brother, Adrial, who weighed 420g. With a combined weight of 750 g (1.65 lb), they are the lightest twins at birth.

“The record-breaking Nadarajah twins came into the world at a gestational age of exactly 22 weeks. If they had been born even an hour earlier, no attempt would have been made to save their lives.”They reported from the organization.

The mother also reminded that most hospitals do not try to save babies born before 24-26 weeks and that is why they suffered. That, added to the fact that months ago she had lost her first pregnancy in the same hospital.

“When I went into labor, the babies were denied all life support measures at the hospital I was admitted to and I was nearly left to die… We were in ‘shock’… No words could capture the emotional, mental and physical trauma we experienced in the moments that occurred,” Shakina revealed.

Meanwhile, the twins’ father, Kevin Nadarajah, said he was awake that night, “with tears streaming down my face,” praying for a sign.

But The story took another turn when, the next day, the mother was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, which specializes in resuscitating 22-week-old babies. Even so, the situation was difficult.

They recount that on Shakina’s second day of labor, 21 weeks and 6 days into her pregnancy, they were told that if the babies were born even a few minutes before their 22-week mark, they would be left to die.

“They told us it would be a ‘death sentence’ for them and that they would have many disabilities, but we insisted that the babies have a chance to live,” said Shakina, who meanwhile, despite profuse bleeding, was doing her best to “hold the babies.”

However, half an hour before midnight, he felt his water break. She was devastated.”I thought this was it,” she recalled. “They are going to die and it will be because of me.”

Fortunately, Shakina was informed that she had not actually broken the bag. Exhausted, the mother-to-be quickly fell asleep. Shakina woke up 15 minutes after midnight, and this time she was breaking water for real.

Miraculously, within an hour and a half, at a gestational age of 22 weeks 0 days, both twins were delivered and successfully resuscitated.

After the birth came another battle

Adiah and Adrial remained under the hospital’s care for nearly six months, facing complications with brain bleeding, sepsis and fluid management. Both babies had extremely thin and transparent skin.

The second week after he was born, the boy Adrial suddenly developed an intestinal perforation, which led to a bloodstream infection and significant inflammation throughout his body. Her fragile skin suffered severe flaking each time the catheter required replacement.

Shakina and Kevin were asked multiple times to consider withdrawing medical attention, but that only served to strengthen their resolve; the parents were determined to save their babies. While the doctors focused on potential risks and future outcomes, Shakina and Kevin chose to focus on their babies’ progress.

They spent up to 12 hours each day next to the twins, holding their hands and singing to them. After 161 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, Adiah was cleared for discharge, with Adrial following a week later.

“Finally, we were able to get them home, without breathing or feeding tubes,” they recounted. Since being discharged, Adiah has been growing “very well” and reaching all the milestones for her corrected age, according to Shakina.

Adiah, the girl, now weighs around 6kg, which is 18 times heavier than her birth weight. She “She is an extremely happy and sociable baby, and she smiles all day.” In addition, her parents assure that she is very talkative and has “conversations” with them and her toys for hours.

As for Adrial, he has been back to the hospital twice since being released and has spent several weeks recovering from infections and respiratory problems. After returning from her last hospitalization, she required home oxygen support.. “He is progressing well…he is observant, attentive and intelligent” and, like his parents, he loves music.

Shakina and Kevin are devout Christians and believe that the power of prayer, from friends, family and even strangers around the world, helped save the twins’ lives. “Babies were close to death so many times, and as people prayed, things miraculously changed,” the mother explained.

For now, the world’s most premature twins are monitored by quite a few medical specialists (cardiologists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists and hematologists), but overall they are doing “very well” and exceeding expectations.
