‘The Mandalorian’: the third season would be a failure in audience

Bad news for Disney: the new episodes of The Mandalorian are not meeting audience expectations. According to data from Samba TVthe premiere of the third season, compared to those of other series of starwars, is not highlighting as expected.

Before I continue, I need to point out that the data behind this analysis is not official from Disney. Samba TV counts the content consumption habits of 25 million televisions distributed in 3 million homes. Despite being a reliable source for this type of report —they are disseminated through The Wrap—, you have to take it easy while we wait for a pronouncement from the company of Mickey Mouse.

Samba TV mentions that, based on its sample, the first episode of season 3 was watched in less than 1.5 million households. A priori, it does not seem to be a negative figure, but everything changes when we compare it with the productions of Star Wars that have recently been released.

The premiere of the third season of The Mandalorian had a 28% lower audience compared to Obi Wan Kenobi. Of course, he surpassed The Book of Boba Fett and Andor with 2% and 50%, respectively.

The problem is that The Book of Boba Fett and Andor They do not represent a good comparison parameter, since it is well known that both adventures, in terms of audience, were far from what was expected by Disney.

Considering that The Mandalorian is the standard series of Star Wars, these numbers are not positive. If we add to the above that the third episode is already classified by many as the worst of all -despite having a spectacular combat sequence-, the alarms could go off if the rest of the third season is not convincing.

Dragging the losing streak started by The Book of Boba Fett?

The Mandalorian

The factors that would have caused the loss of interest in the third season of The Mandalorian. Firstly, the fact of waiting almost two years for its premiere. A fan can wait patiently, but… What about those who aren’t?

There is no denying that Grogu, from the first season, attracted a fair number of people whose interest in Star Wars it is little or none. For them it becomes a transient trend which can end at any time.

Nor can we ignore what happened during those two years of waiting. While the third season of The Mandalorian was in production, Lucasfilm released The Book of Boba Fett, Obi Wan Kenobi and Andor. They all share something in common: they disappointed in some way.

starting with him The Book of Boba Fett, its existence doesn’t make any sense. He fandom I expected an adventure at the level of the character who has been so fond of since the first trilogy of films. In the end, it turned out to be a prologue to the third season of The Mandalorian. Boba Fett was relegated to the background.

Obi Wan Kenobi, for its part, was a narrative disappointment. Its development was quite slow and we had to wait for the last episodes to see its best moments.

With Andor A somewhat absurd situation occurred. For years, followers of Star Wars they demanded a fresh adventure away from the Skywalker Saga. Andor It was precisely that, an experience that proposes something different from what we are used to. However, his hearing was a complete failure.

It will be interesting, then, to see if the third season of The Mandalorian he is able to bounce back and meet Disney’s demands. Otherwise, we could be talking about Star Wars is suffering another stage of fatigue, now on the small screen.
