Valve would like an OLED Steam Deck… but it’s not as easy as it seems

Although Steam Deck It is a very recent platform, it is not the first time that we have talked about a future model, a conversation that since Valve they don’t shy away from it. Surely one of the features that players would ask for the most from this hypothetical hardware revision would be, without a doubt, an OLED screen, something that even Nintendo Switch can boast of. However, from the company they do not see it as easy as “said and done”.

It is important to note that, according to Pierre Loup Griffais, a representative of Valve, they are aware that this would be a point to take into account. “We at Valve understand the limitations of current Steam Deck technology in terms of display.”, he confessed. However, he anticipates that although the idea is tempting, and the inclusion of an OLED screen in a future model, evidently, it is not nearly so simple.

A change to take into account… but nothing easy

“I think people are looking at things in a higher version and assuming it’s an easy inclusion,” he says. “But really, the screen is at the core of the device. Everything is anchored to it. Basically everything is built around everything when it comes to such a small device. I think it would be a bigger amount of work than people are willing to take on.. I don’t think we’re ruling anything out, but the idea of just going to a new screen, you need something more to make it feasible.”

“It’s something you just have to plan for,” he continues to explain. “When we worked on this display we made sure everything was supported, even though the frame rate wasn’t ready at launch. It was very important to us that everything was supported, so it’s something you have to keep in mind when you reevaluate and choose possible options. It’s not just choosing between LCD and OLED, different display technologies, it’s also about designing the entire system.”.
